This is Ladakh's oldest monastery, going back to the 10th century.The temple complex with its attendant houses for the monks and the village below are not the original buildings of course. The pressures of being on a major trade route in the past and the constant cycles of demolition and reconstruction by the monks themselves have led to great changes in the buildings over the years.

In Ladakh the landscape itself becomes the sacred space. The elements of spiritual substantiation: the monasteries, the chorten or stupa, the prayer flags, and prayer wheels define the landscape as sacred.
